Social media strategy

The absolute basics

It’s an online world out there so if your business isn’t on social media, you could find that you’re missing out on potential customers. Social media has opened up endless opportunities for businesses to connect instantly with potential customers on a global level, but it can become overwhelming.

It’s important not to jump in feet first or you could get so swamped with social media content and posting that you will find no time left to actually run your business. Or worse, you will start off well, only to find you run out of ideas and time to post updates on your social media channels after a few months, leaving your business feeds empty and out-of-date.

This is why you need to start with a social media strategy. It helps to ensure that your brand or business are always online and saying the right things for your brand to build and engage with your target audience. The team at LCM can help with every aspect.

Here are a few of the basic things to consider for your social media strategy:

1. Find out which channels your audience uses

There is no point putting lots and lots of photographs of your products on Instagram if your key target audience is more likely to be found on Facebook, so the first thing you need to do is some research to find out where your potential customers are on social media and which channels will reach them most effectively.

2. Create a posting strategy

Once you know which platforms your audience use, you need to create a posting strategy – you need to decide how often you will post, what time of day, and what type of posts you are going to aim for – whether it’s mainly image-based, video or text. You need to decide this for each platform you are operating from as they all work differently.

3. Create a content calendar

Once you have your approach in place you need to come up with a content calendar – this is where you decide on the topic of your posts for each month and plot them on a calendar. That way you always know what topic you should be writing about in advance and you never find yourself stuck for topics.

4. Have social media goals

You need to have an idea of what you want to achieve with your social media strategy – is it a certain number of followers, a certain level of engagement, number of shares etc... so make sure you have goals in place and ways to measure them. Social media needs to have a business purpose for you and not just posts for the sake of it.

All businesses want to optimise revenue. Your business strategy will identify ways of driving revenue; your marketing team will generate awareness and leads; your sales team looks at the most effective ways of converting leads to sales, and then your customer service helps to keep customers buying. Another key factor to consider is your brand.

If someone you trusted said to you, “I think we should rebrand”, what would be your first thought? Maybe panic, fear and an overwhelming feeling of not knowing where to even begin? You are not alone. A rebrand can seem like a mammoth task and one that you may think you just don’t have the time for, but you might be missing a trick.

From a young age we grow up immersed at Christmas in a fairy tale world of elves, reindeers and sleighs, and the ubiquitous image of a man in a red suit squeezing himself down our chimneys. As adults we still get excited about the magic of Christmas, the hope it brings and the joy of being a part of something magical.
